General Information
Day-to-day life at St Francis School — ethos, conduct, timetable, attendance, and more.
About Our School — The Maltese Islands form an archipelago at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea and have been inhabited since prehistoric times (Thake, 1994). According to the Maltese National Statistics Office (2024), the population stands at around 575,000 residents. Our school is located in the southern region of Malta, in the historic area of Cottonera. It is the largest among the four primary schools administered by the same congregation across the Maltese Islands. Each of these four schools is autonomous and includes a feeder kindergarten. Our annexed kindergarten is situated in Santa Luċija. At our school, we are committed to delivering a high-quality education that empowers each student to reach their full potential. Our educational programmes are grounded in the National Curriculum Framework, the Learning Outcomes Framework and other national policies and directives.
Our Ethos
Our ethos is encapsulated in our Mission Statement: Faithful to the charism of our foundress, Mother Margherita De Brincat, we strive to educate the whole person in a value-rich environment, transforming students into true Christians, growing in wisdom, age and grace before God and the people of God, mastering academic skills in order that they may contribute to and thrive in a global neighbourhood. We firmly believe that children learn best when they feel happy and secure. All lessons and activities are designed to be engaging and inclusive. We work closely with parents to address behavioural challenges… Communication is maintained via Microsoft Teams and via MySchool, which is our school’s digital platform. Kindly refer to the school’s Vision & Mission in the About Us section.
Behaviour & Conduct
Respect and etiquette are at the heart of our school culture. Positive behaviour is encouraged through guidance and restorative approaches. Misbehaviour is addressed in collaboration with parents when necessary. All new families receive a School Code of Behaviour booklet outlining expectations related to conduct, punctuality, communication and school policies. Kindly refer to the SFS Policies in the Parents section.
School Timetable
The school opens at 7:00 am and closes at 1:45 pm. The official school day runs from 7:40 am to 1:15 pm, with supervision provided before and after lessons. We promote punctuality as a form of respect and responsibility. Students are expected to arrive on time and bring all necessary books, stationery and resources.
Attendance
Regular attendance is critical for academic success (King, 2000; Morrissey, Hutchison & Winsler, 2014). Absences must be reported and justified. A medical certificate is required for absences longer than three days. Parents are also expected to inform the school about late arrivals or early dismissals with proper documentation.
Personal Belongings
Parents are reminded to label their children’s belongings to help keep classrooms organised and ensure lost items can be returned.
First Aid & Medical Needs
In case of illness or injury, First Aiders and SLT members immediately attend to the student, and parents are contacted. At the start of each year, parents complete GDPD forms indicating any medical conditions, allowing the school to prepare accordingly, including specialised First Aid training and consultations with healthcare professionals.
Safeguarding
The school prioritises the safety, rights and well-being of every child. We strictly follow the Child Safety Services procedures, the Minor Protection (Alternative Care) Act (2019), and Church Safeguarding Policies. Our Designated Safeguarding Officer works in line with the Secretariat for Catholic Education’s guidelines and reports to the Head of School and psychosocial support team; all staff received Safeguarding training in 2024, with ongoing updates.
